If you get much over 50c-55c on your athlon; you've got a pretty lousy heatsink/fan combo. Even the stock boxed amd HS's that I've put together never go over 53c full load. I've got 4 athlon rigs at here at home and the worst one is 42C full load (All OEM chips running various HS/Fan combos). Running Vcool, they're at room temp at idle. The P4 is much more impressive in it's throttling capabilities; however most modern AMD MB's have the option to shutdown on HS fan failure. The flipside is that I can afford to replace an AMD for the cost of the P4. Haven't blown one yet or crushed one either; I think most of the horror stories out there can be tallied to mis-handling. Still have one of the first Duron 600's to come out running in a machine at work --been overclocked to 950 for over a couple of years running 24h/5d with the same taisol aluminum HS purchased with it (48C full load)... Would'nt turn down a P4 if offered though... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dennis Crawley" > Try google: vcool. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Russell McMahon" > To: > Sent: Saturday, February 15, 2003 4:11 AM > Subject: Re: Erroneous PC cpu operating temperature claims > > > > > as far as i am aware it is true > > > the CPU temp i have seen on P4 and AMD systems differ greatly P4 ~ > 30-40 > > AMD > > > ~50-70 C -- http://www.piclist.com hint: To leave the PICList mailto:piclist-unsubscribe-request@mitvma.mit.edu
