I know the several systems I've built have no floating sensor under the CPU, yet very quickly display a temperature rise/fall if you jam the CPU fan with your finger. Since I have had too many CPU/MB's fans fail, I always make a point of confirming that the 'fail safe' DOES fail safe, while still under 'brand new' warranty.
