Sounds like too much fuzz. When I do it by hand, i use a simple 1mm tipped 15-30w iron and I use 0.8mm wire with fluxed core. Sor IC's, start by aligning the chip and soldeing one of the corner legs. Then take the leg on the opposite corner. Now it's simple to do the rest 1 by 1. I do prefer reflow soldering and a hot-air gun instead though.
