SmartMedia is basically a FLASH chip in a different package - a "smart card" like thing. A Compactflash card has an onboard controller that makes it emulate an IDE (ATA) hard disk drive. CF also has functions for hardware password protection - IIRC a lot of PC hard drives don't actually support this function (it's in the ATA spec) as it is very rarely used.
