IIRC it depends on the version of MPASM you're using. Some assemblers
default to W, others default to F. IIRC the current version of MPASM
defaults to F. But it's not good coding practice to leave out the last
parameter

I once ended up going through the PIC16F87x Family Datasheet (or rather
databook) "with a fine-toothed comb". Then I realized that I'd clipped the
GND supply wire on my Protoboard with a scope probe... Oops.
