I've done the same thing for years with a large
(60w) iron, large (1mm) solder that has more flux,
and just applied a *lot* of solder to the row of
legs so it forms one solid solder run, then running
the iron up and down the row. You can remove SIP
the same way and "walk" DIP chips from double sided
boards the same way too.
