Well just going a smidgen sideways on this perennial debate, a book worth getting is Pic  C by  Nigel Gardner. The only reason I say that is that it usefully shows some statements in CCS 'C' and the ASM equivalent, though just as it's getting useful it leaves you in the lurch.

Personally I found using ASM and 'C" side by side useful - I have always found pointers easier to understand and implement in ASM than in 'C'
