Glad you added that.  I develop many algorithms in MSVC 5.1 and use the
final results UNCHANGED to compile with PICC.  I've gotten to the point
where I use the MSVC .mak files and just change the lines for the compiler
and linker.

Maybe you should investigate picc more closely.
