Well I would look at using PIC C Lite from Hi-Tech as it is free, as a starting position. This would allow you to experiment without shelling out any funds. It will generate code for an f877, using 2 ram banks, and up to 2k code space, so you should be able to fit a reasonable program in it. When you get to a point of needing more, then the full version is available for purchase (I believe it will run in demo mode for 30 days, but cannot recall off hand if it has any limitations in this mode).
