I wrote a compiler (Jal) and now use that almost exclusively because I
became fed up with having to deal with all such little details over and
over again (I don't mind dealing with a problem once, but after that it
should be someone else's job - preferrably some*thing* elses job). Yet
by your reasoning I don't know much about assembly!
