at one of the microchip seminars they said one of thier clients had a few 12
bit cores embedded in earth drilling bits; must get fairly warm in that
scenerio --even with the coolant pumping through it...  Me, I've had a
ceramic dip hot enough to probably boil water on when carelessly wired
(enough to melt the breadboard) --part still worked after that (well, sort
of...)
