I used to explain IBM 360 assembler programming problems to my wife (an elementary school teacher) - her eyes would glaze over for the duration - but I'd eventually solve my problem. I found that it worked just as well if I talked to the budgie - his eyes might have glazed over as well, but they were too small to see.
