You may be right - I can only relate experiences with my own circuits, and I've found problems can come from unexpected places, which is why I assume nothing these days. For example, two instances where grounding the crystal can fixed a whole mess of poor performance in completely different boards, yet this was not required in many dozens of other projects that used the same crystals. As far as the particular LED circuit in question goes, 100mA is a lot of battery power being switched and I just think it prudent to make provision for noise-reduction, whether the noise be through tracks or radiated.
