Wild idea, not sure if it will work!  Maybe have one software handshake and
the other hardware handshake.  Adjust your code accordingly.  I use a
simplex direct I/O to I/O for pic to pic which work very fast while using a
fairly short cable length (I/O & ground only). {slewrate}
