I would suspect that none at all will not have done the 7805 much good. D=
rawing excessive current would certainly make them very hot.

Are these standard red LEDS? If so I'd try 1-1.5K resistors assuming 5-1.=
7v/2-3mA.
Are you getting any voltage swings at the PIC's outputs, with out the LED=
S in place?
