Since others have covered the LCD questions, I'll tackle the programmer one. As far as I know, the only programmer that will work directly with MPLAB (other than the Microchip ones, of course) is the WARP13 from Newfound Electronics (http://www.newfoundelectronics.com). MELabs would be the people to talk to about that.
