The 16f819 for instance, is still listed as 'future product' at http://www.microchip.com/1010/pline/picmicro/category/embctrl/8kbytes/de vices/16f819/index.htm , yet I have a few tubes, bought from my regular supplier, devilvered within a few days after ordering. It seems the best bet is to check whether a particular chip is available for sampling, but this might give 'false positives' for chips that are available *only* for sampling.
