I don't want to discourage you, I have gone roughly the same route, but you should be aware that there are different programming protocols for different chip groups, and Microchip is inventing more and more variations, so you will either get stuck with a programmer that cannot handle the latest chips, or you will be forced to update your code regularly. If you are in it for the challenge, go ahead.
