Alan, My sympathies. When my PC's power supply went wild last year, it killed the hard drive. I had an identical hard drive bought at the same time, and I swapped controller boards. Although the drive now spun up, it would not work. My hypothesis is the head electronics also died. Your mileage may vary, but making regular backups is your best insurance. Your computer can die at any time with no warning. I did price data recovery. The economy service(7 days) was over $2000. This was a 20 meg maxtor drive.
