Hi-

The learning curve on this is pretty severe.  Have you looked through
the www.piclist.com resources? -- lots of good stuff.  You need to start
with the simplest of all programs, which you have done.  Unfortunately,
it's a bit of a moving target.  When I started a couple of years ago,
almost everything was done with the 16F84, so it was a little easier.
 Now we have several competing series which are subtly different (628,
87x, not to mention the 18Fs), and require close reasing of the
datasheet (and usually other datasheets in the same family).
 Unfortunately, you have to master: the computer language, the hardware
design, the software, the programmer, the programmer software, etc etc,
and they all have to work to get the blinking light.

One main suggestion is to get a prebuilt binary and stuff that into your
hardware -- that should get the hardware debugged.  Then you can
gradually modify the code to learn the system.
