I'm not sure I'm convinced.  The 18F's might be easier overall to learn on,
but I'm not sure you'll learn PIC stuff on them, so you may be giving up on
a lot of the freely available "stuff" on the web (existing projects, etc.)
If you're not specifically trying to learn about PICs, you might be better
off with an atmel AVR, flash 8051, or flash motorola something...
