You have to take into account the amortization costs with the toolchain. He's already spent a hell of a lot of money if he's only going to do one or two hobby projects using a PIC. It seems like you're talking about marriage while I'm promoting dating. There's a vast difference between investing $20 in parts, a few web searches, and some downloads for a hobby project against upwards of several hundreds of dollars for potentially seldom used development tools. We're not all professionals here. There are students and folks who do it because it's fun. And for us toolchain costs are extremely important. BTW I didn't specifically mention costs in the 1st part of the post. I was just asking what toolchain (development language, compiler/assembler, programmer, simulator) did you suggest for the 18F.
