I'm doing this in a little project. The main problem with talking to a GSM system that will send and recieve SMS messages is that most of them will halt as they recieve a message even if you are doing another action like reading the previous message. This causes very erratic behaviour in a system where a lot of SMS'es will be send and recieved in a short time. If you only will be sending, or doing send / recieve very infrequently, then you can safely asume the modem/phone will actually do and perform as expected.
