Ah, there's the problem.  The 16F877 doesn't have an internal oscillator.
See Section 12.2 "Oscillator Configurations" on page 121 of DS3029C
"PIC16F87x Data Sheet".  RC oscillator mode means just that: you have to
hook up an R and C.  Especially for breadboarding, I just set the
oscillator to HS mode and use a 20MHz crystal and two 22pF caps.
