No. The TV doesn't really do anything with the Macroguard stuff. The problem is that sometimes with older TVs that have S-Video, there is a capacitor and a transistor network of some sort that are designed for a slightly older revision of S-video. Generally, this causes no problems, but in your case it seems to be frying them. Eventually, it will get to the point where all the scanlines of the TV are getting projected right in the middle, with no 60Hz refresh at all. You need a capacitor and an IC replaced in order to handle the small changes with the new S-Vid protocol. Allow me to do some research and I'll try and find out which.
