The economics of a basement in sandy Florida are not attractive. There are a few that I am aware of there are a couple of very discouraging problems. Many of the residential areas water their lawns with water from "driven" wells. You go to the hardware store and get a well point and some pipe and a big hammer and start driving it. It gets wet pretty quick! The other is the problems associated with digging the hole. The slope of the hole might well require an acre just to dig a 1500 sq ft hole. I suppose the back fill would always put a pretty good load on the walls as well.
