I second this recommend, I lurked around this list for about 3 years before I got started in PICs recently. I first became more proficient in C and made some assembler programs on a full blown desktop machine, followed by parallel port programming to introduce me to the electrical dimension of the hobby. If you want a quicker start though, skip learning C and give assembler a go. Start with simple goals and enjoy the learning process, it'll take a while so you better enjoy it if your going to get through it. Not quite 3 years - don't let that scare you - but probably at least a good year to get a good foundation. I'm just a slow learner. You may wonder why people on this list think that you should learn on a full blown machine first. The hardest part of jumping to PIC for me was and is still debugging my programs. It's hard not having the ability to trace through code line by line or being able to readily output print statements. When you become well acquainted with low level programming on a regular machine first, you get the benefit of learning how not to make a lot of mistakes before you jump into a trickier environment, saving much frustration.
