No, but I can suggest he ask for himself.  Is he going to learn PICs or
are you going to do it for him?

In any case, if someone doesn't know programming, I don't think PICs are a
good starting point.  PICs are optimized for minimum cost to get the job
done (and rightfully so), not for easy programming.  A low end, preferably
16 bit, microprocessor would be easier to learn first.

If he really wants to learn PICs, then at least start with the 18F series.
The wider instruction word has alleviated some of the banking and paging
problems.
