[6809] IMHO, THE BEST 8-bit micro ever developed. Pity Motorola fumbled and dropped the ball. Well, they did the 68000 families as followons, since 8bit micros were getting pretty un-sexy by then. The 68k line was pretty successful and well received, so I'm not sure it was THAT much of a fumble. Extending 8 bit micros to ridiculous amounts of memory or into microcontroller-like all-in-one chips is a pretty recent development, in general...
