I learned using this style and have stuck to it. Perhaps the informal rule
that "a function shouldn't be longer than one screenful of text" promotes
use of the second method, whereby a few extra lines of code can be squeezed
in. Alternatively, the second method is more appropriate for published code
(books/magazines), where space is an issue.
