And correct. Some commercial Linux distributions tend to have some proprietary software included, and much of that software that differentiates them from the others is the installation software. Once the installation is complete, the only other major difference between distributions is your choice of software package management tools. The installation is usually where new people trying Linux get disappointed, so distributions that autodetect hardware correctly and bring up a "fully working" system right from the the installation have a definite "advantage" over others when recommending a Linux distribution a new person to Linux should try. For the ultimate in "build it from the ground up", Gentoo Linux (http://www.gentoo.org), which builds itself from the raw source code, has become wildly popular with the professional Linux/Unix crowd. There's also LFS (Linux From Scratch) documentation which is very good for anyone with multiple weeks of time on their hands and nothing better to do... http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ A friend of mine who is a Unix/Linux security expert jokingly called Gentoo Linux, "Linux for the Laid Off" after he spent multiple days setting it up. But... as he pointed out, EVERYTHING on his machine was built from source with the exact switch options and settings HE wanted after that. Pretty neat.
