There is at least one live news group : alt.rec.metalworking

I went the same path as you are planning, I am concluding that
a lathe alone is not much value for general metal shaping.
without a milling machine you can do "round tricks" only.
any "square jobs" need a milling machine (or milling attachment to
the lathe)
