It sounds like you are referring to Alexander Graham Bell and the
telephone.  That did happen in Boston and he was Scottish, but I don't
think that 6 January was a significant date.

Samuel Morse demonstrated his telegraph on 6 January, but I thought that
happened in Britain somewhere.  Are you referring to Boston England, not
Massachusetts, perhaps?

Yes, we just got a pretty decent one, but hardly unusual.  There's about
1/2 meter of snow on the ground here now, which is also not a
statistically significant situation for January.
