I have been using Linux as my main OS since about 1998 or so, the Red Hat 6.0 days. At the time, I had Unix experience on SunOS and Solaris, so moving to yet another Unix was not that difficult for me. But I still ran into problems like you mention below. Things are getting better all the time, but it still has a was to go. Then, 2 months ago, I bought an iMac with OS X. Wow, finally! Apple accomplished what Linux has been trying to do: put a nice GUI on top of Unix. No more recompiling the kernel to get my USB mouse to work, NFS to work, etc. Now you can run all your favorite MS, Intuit, and Adobe products while getting a zsh shell window to a *real* BSD Unixen. All in all, I am very impressed. Apple needs to keep pace with Intel chips a bit better, but that's not really Apple's fault (damn Motorola). And the GUI can seem a bit slow at times. It suffers from the same thing XP does: make things look cool at the expense of CPU. I'm all for making things look cool, but when it begins to interfere with my usage, then it has gone too far. There are a few small cases where this is true. Also, there are still some application areas where OS X needs help, and PCB software is one of them. I'm sure more and more engineering programs will get ported to OS X as more geeks start using it. I hope the guys from Eagle are listening: Eagle on OS X would rock! Linux is still my favorite for no-GUI servers, but I'm an OS X convert for Unix on the desktop. -Dave -- http://www.piclist.com hint: The list server can filter out subtopics (like ads or off topics) for you.
