I think a large part of Microsoft's success is due to their catering to
hardware vendors.  Say what you like about windows usability, but its
ability to run on and support a huge variety of 3rd party hardware is
nothing short of amazing (from both technical and business perspectives.)
Many companies (cough, cough) have trouble doing as well INTERNALLY.
