For very similar reasons, I've become quite good friends with the 16F872. Smallish package (28-pin 0.3" dip), flash, similar features to the F84 BUT includes a 5-ch ADC. If you need more ADC, then look at the other 16F87x chips, though you start getting into the .6" DIP packages.
