Some OKI & NEC controllers are HD44780-compatible but have
minor timing differences. Not generally affecting init though. It may
be an odd-ball controller. Are these OEM rather than retail ?

Unless it's an LCD I've used before I never expect an immediate
result. Usually get it, but never expect it. I know just how you feel...
one lousy character would make you very happy eh ?
