Well I am not using an RS232 port.  I am using a MAX3471 - RS485 chip.
The battery operated units will be connected to each other.  So there
will be no outside power source.

Would connecting the RO of the MAX to the RX as well as RB0 pin of the
chip solve the waking up issue as Stef suggested (given I might be
missing the first byte)
