In a similar project, I used a 74LCX125 (running on 3.3V) to convert from 5V to 3.3V and 74ABT125 (running on 5V) to go from 3.3V to 5V. The 74ABT125 was probably not needed for the 3.3V to 5V conversion, as 3.3V should be high enough for the PIC running on 5V, but I needed to tristate the SPI coming from an MMC card.
