I've had bad 74LS logic chips before, so I don't know why I assumed a much more complex chip (i.e. the '509) wouldn't fail. Tunnel vision, I guess. It's not the cost of the chip, it only cost me $1-$1.25 each in moderate quantities. I spent more money than that in labor scratching my head when the customer called to say it failed! Hindsight being more accurate than foresight, I should have used the industrial grade units. Shame on me. I'll remedy that in the interest of customer relations. Thanks for your input!
