This has the ring of Good Advice, and I am presently following it (despite
the funhouse challenges posed by some latent dyslexia).  Thanks again for
steering me in the right direction.  By the way, LCALL and LGOTO appear in
the Quick Reference Guide that came with a recent PICSTART Plus, but I
haven't spotted an elaboration on their function elsewhere.  They seem to
take care of PCLATH <4,3> for the initial leap, but don't clean it up again
on RETURN.
