Well, if it's not important to you that you use RS232, and you just want a
high-speed signalling protocol, try LVDS.  It takes 8 or 16 bit parallel
inputs and is capable of up to 3.125Gbps.  Good for high speed board
interconnect without all those parallel lines.

The SN65LVDS95, Serdes (Serializer/Deserializer) Transmitter, and
SN65LVDS96 Receiver from TI are a good example.
