I rigged up a TERN TD-40 to talk to a Mars coinage box about 4 years ago for a demo at the company I was with at the time - - the TERN TD-40 (programmed in C) in turn talked "CLP" to a Motorola CreataLink2XT ReFlex25 telemetry transceiver back into Weblink Wireless's network. Initially, for development, I put the 'test' vending machine (a 'Coke' machine) onto the LAN at work via a TCP/IP app (via a client/server pair of apps written in Visual Basic) in order to 'test' the protocol that talked to the coinage box at my desk. The demo went off without a hitch - we reported 'product inventory' and sales of a Coke machine on a trade floor via a *live* web page created for the event on my desktop PC that automaticlly FTP'd the created web page to a dedicated publicly accesable server! The specific details in my mind are sketchy any more - the language/protocol the Mars box used was "DEX" and I do have some C source code lying around ...
