I recall mention on the list about the IO pins used for UART use are
automatically configured when the USART is enabled.


This is not the case with the 628 chips. The TRIS bits must be set
accordingly for it to work. ie. RX = in, TX = out.

It is in the data sheet, although I missed it and got stung.
