I believe the 17 series are the only ones that can run with external program memory. Another way to do it would be to have a boot loader that runs on a flash PIC, reads a program off an external chip, and programs itself. I think this might have been mentioned on the list before. Of course, unless you need very specific hardware peripherals (such as an LCD driver), why not just go to a flash based PIC and ICSP or ICD?
