I had a play at this years Masters (July 2002) in fact I went there pretty much exclusively to have a look at this chip as I am gearing up to port the muviem Java Virtual Machine core (http://www.virtualbreadboard.com/uvmFAQ.htm) to the dsPIC. I also spoke at length with the lead architect about the chip, its potential and some of the key design decisions (like multiple cycle divide..why?) I was very impressed but the thing that became clear is that this was microchips first go a truly 'new' architecture in that most of the other work on the PIC's has been done on the architecture they inherited at birth and their team was better at tweaking than starting over. This plus a couple of tough dsp 'patent' avoidance issues seems to have contributed to the delays. NEVERTHELESS! I think this is a brilliant chip. The chip itself has really fantastic opportunities for compiler optimisations, which I am really looking forward to exploiting. muviem is already pretty darn fast but the dsPIC supports powerful features like hardware loops that come from the DSP world but with the dual architecture can also be used for the Microcontroller instructions ie in a general way that are just really hard to beat. Also some multi-function DSP single cycle instructions which if you think creatively about can do really nice 'non DSP' things like 'turbo' neural net evalution. I for one am looking forward to porting muviem to dsPIC and dropping in cool objects like dsp filters and nueral net objects to make it a snap to really get these chips working hard. The dsPIC isn't here yet. I did get a chance to play with the dsPIC simulator and development tools at last year Masters (July 2001!). mChip apparently had some serious problems with it and had to delay it significantly. It is a pretty slick design and I am looking forward to getting my hands on it.
