I think it's one of the best enhancements over the 14bit core if you want to do some high speed bit banging. I suspect a lot of code being used on the 18x is legacy stuff that has been ported from a 14bit PIC, and it's simply the speed and memory that is being taken advantage of rather than the extra instructions/peripheral features.
