I got the MAX3100 to operate properly in time but had a problem driving the crystal input directly. It required a limiting resistor (220 to 330 ohm) to prevent edges from exceeding VCC. When this occurred, the chip acted very strangely. It was NOT noted anywhere in the documents. Maxim has a problem of doing this sometimes. Its actually a very nice part. I used two of them, as I needed 3 serial ports (1 from PIC16F873 + these).
