Howdy Andy! It's been awhile since I used a MAX3100 with a PIC but I
had an application using a remote sensor that sent data at 115Kbaud
using 9-Bit addressing. All I can say is the MAX3100 worked as
advertized using a simple `bit-banged' SPI interface. I was working
from data sheet 19-1259; Rev 0; 7/97.

    As far as the DS1306, I've used similar parts and they always had a
configuration bit to start the oscillator.
