My wife and I had a moment like this while travelling in Mongolia. One of
the guides at a disused monastery we went to asked where we were from. On
being told we were from New Zealand, the conversation went something like
this: -

Guide: New Zealand? That part of Australia?
Wife: No, that is like saying Mongolia is part of China.
Guide: (with much apologies) Ah I understand!

We reassured him that we took it all in good heart, and were not offended.
